Aya is 8 years old, a resident of Beit Umar, in the Hebron region, and is one of 8 children in her family. About a year ago, a cancerous growth was found in Aya's head. Over the last half a year, Aya has undergone 3 difficult surgeries in order to remove the growth, and she was hospitalized in Hadassah-Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem for 3 months. The surgeries were funded by the Peres Peace Center. Recently Aya began radiation and chemotherapy treatments at Hadassah Hospital, which she will need to continue for around two months. The Palestinian Authority funds the treatments themselves, but none of the accompanying expenses. Aya's father, Omar, brings her every day on the extremely long journey from Beit Umar to the hospital in Jerusalem. During the entire time that Aya was hospitalized, he stayed with her in the hospital. Now for some 8 months Omar, who is the sole provider for his 8 children, has not been working. The family is currently in a difficult financial position and survives mostly based on food and monetary donations from members of their community in Beit Umar, and at times is left with nothing but a chunk of bread. In addition to the regular family expenses, the daily trips to Jerusalem have quickly become quite a financial burden on the family. Aya's condition does not allow her to ride in public transportation, so she and her father currently ride in a special taxi that brings them to the Jerusalem border checkpoint, after which volunteers pick them up and bring them to the hospital. The family is experiencing great difficulty in supporting these expenses, which is not to mention the great emotion burden that Aya's condition places on them (unfortunately the PA does not have an emotional support system for family members of people with cancer, nor does it have a system for children suffering from cancer). We are therefore collecting donations for Aya's daily transportation to the hospital and general financial support for her family's survival. Any donation will be kindly accepted. Additionally, we are still in need of volunteers who can meet Aya and her father at the border checkpoint (number 300, next to Gilo) and bring them to Hadassah-Ein Kerem each day around 7:00 a.m. and back to the checkpoint 3-4 hours later. Even a ride in one direction would be of great help. For more information , please feel free to contact Umar, Aya's father, directly (he speaks Hebrew well) at: (+972) 52-203-9589. To send a donation, please send to The Olive Tree Movement Yafit Jamila Bisso at: For additional information (In English, Hebrew or Arabic) you may also contact Jamila at any time at: (+972) 52-625-1227 or (+972) 52-625-1226. | printer friendly version
